Welcome Back Campers!

Welcome to week 5 of Oklahoma 4-H STEMist Virtual Camps! This week we are expanding our survival skills as we learn about camping at 4-H STEM Camp Know How. Starting Monday, July 13th we will set up camp discovering the proper tent structure and engineering techniques! On Tuesday, July 14th get ready to learn how to cook outdoors. We will be talking about cast iron skillets and outdoor cooking! Then Wednesday, July 15th we will gather around the campfire as we learn campfire songs and make our very own instrument. Following on Thursday, July 16th we will look up at the beautiful night sky and learn about the different constellations. We can't forget dessert, Friday July 17th we will finish the week with yummy s’mores. You don’t want to miss out! 

Each day of camp we will provide you with an activity sheet with clear instructions of exactly what to do each day! Be sure to click the link at the bottom of each activity sheet to find a Microsoft form to send in each day's activities/pictures. Also log on to flipgrid.com and use the code provided at the bottom of the activity sheet to show us how your time outdoors went. Finally, remember that there will be 5 YouTube Videos to go along with each day of Camping! You will be able to find these on the Oklahoma 4-H YouTube page!

Accessibility to these activities and instructional videos will be available online. Camp lessons can be completed any time during the camp week. Both Flipgrid and Zoom are downloadable mobile applications. 

We will host a Zoom conference call at 2:00 p.m. CST Friday, July 17th regarding Camping week.

July 13: In-Tents Engineering
On day one we're jumping right in to get in the camping spirit with setting up a tent! Learn how to set up a dome tent with us! No tent? No problem! We have a second activity on day one where we'll be building our own tiny tents! Bring your toothpicks, gummy candies, straws, pipe cleaners and marshmallows and get ready for some fun!
 
 

 
In-Tents Supplies:
 ●      Tent (Optional): 

o   six sided dome tent, 1 ground cloth, tent stakes 

●      Tent Structures: 

o   Straws, pipe cleaners, tooth picks, marshmallows, gum drops or orange slice candies

July 14: Campsite Cooking
The STEMists hope you have an appetite because day two is going to be all about campsite cooking! We'll learn how to use aluminum foil to cook a delicious supper on a campfire, as well as how to make a delicious cast iron pizza and finally we'll make a scrumptious dessert in a dutch oven! All of our recipes can be cooked over a campfire or in your oven at home!   
 
 
 
 
Campsite Cooking Supplies:
 

●      Dutch Oven(optional):

o   Dutch oven (10 inch), disinfecting wipes, heavy duty aluminum foil, paper towel roll, 1 can (16 oz) lemon pie filling, 1 package (15 oz) yellow cake mix, 4 oz cream cheese, ½ cup (1 stick) of butter. optional chocolate chips, fruit, nuts, etc. Charcoal chimney ( found online or local hardware/sporting goods store), 2 - 3 large metal pans (metal hog feed pans work well), charcoal briquettes, 2-3 full sheets of newspaper, grill lighter, metal tongs and oven mitts.

●      Skillet Pizza(optional):

o   pizza dough (homemade, from a pizzeria or store bought), pizza sauce or seasoned tomato sauce. mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, pepperoni, basil (or toppings or your choice), 10 inch cast iron skillet, spoon, spatula, oven mitts 

●      Aluminum Foil(optional): 

o   1 tablespoon butter, 1 hamburger patty, seasoning of your choice (salt, pepper, garlic powder, etc.), vegetables of your choice (potatoes, onions, bell peppers, pepperoncinis, carrots, etc.)

 
July 15: Fun Under the Sun
Sing along with three of our favorite camp songs and discover the proper way to apply insect repellent and sunscreen. All vital in having a safe and fun camping trip. 
 
 
 
Fun under the Sun Supplies:

●      Thumb Piano 

o   cardboard box, scissors, tape, bobby pins or paper clips 

●      Sunscreen and Insect Spray

 
July 16: S'more Science
Craving something sweet but can't find a campfire. You are in luck we will be making solar ovens s'more harnessing the power of the sun's rays. 
 
 
 
S'more Supplies

●      cardboard pizza box, pencil, ruler, box cutter or scissors, aluminum foil, clear tape, black construction paper or black spray paint, plastic wrap or large transparent plastic bag, newspapers, oven mitt, plate, chocolate, graham crackers, marshmallows. Optional: a thermometer that goes up to 250 degree Fahrenheit.  

 
July 17: Summer Skies
On our last day of Camp STEM get ready to stay up past your bedtime because we're going stargazing! Invite your family to come outside with you on Friday night to learn about the night sky! Use a star tracking app on any device to learn about the wonderful sky constellations!
