From authentic old-world classics to recipes inspired by Italian-American cooking, Italian dishes are dinnertime favorites in many American homes. Italian cuisine is more than just pasta. It can include pizza, chicken dishes, vegetables, soups, desserts, and more. This cuisine dates back as far as the 4th century BC. Italian recipes can be complex with creamy saucy and lots of ingredients or simple dishes with fresh meats and vegetables.  Suitcases and passports are not required - but an enthusiasm to explore new foods and cultures will enhance your adventure as we explore Food, Fun, 4-H (FF4H) Around the World!

Germany

German Meal

German food is rich, hearty, diverse, and often reminds us of American food. American and German dishes both center around meat and potatoes, but the focus on sweet and sour flavors is strictly German. When Americans think of German food, they tend to think of sausages, potatoes, and sauerkraut. However, German food is very versatile and differs from region to region. Germany’s cuisine has been shaped not only by the country’s agricultural traditions but also by the many immigrants who have made Germany their home over the centuries.

For this meal, you'll learn how to make Schnitzel with Jägersauce, German cucumber salad, Oktoberfest pretzel muffins, and apple strudel.

Greece

Greek Meal

Greek cuisine is known for its strong flavors, but it’s also known for being one of the healthiest diets in the world. This is due to the consumption of fruit and vegetables, mixed with an adequate amount of protein from meat and nuts. Greece is a nation of small farmers who produce cheeses, oils, fruits, nuts, grains, legumes, and vegetables. These are the foods that form the base of the traditional Greek diet.

You'll learn how to make chicken gyros, zucchini salad, easy hummus, and baklava.

Japan

Japanese Meal

Japanese food is one of the most popular cuisines in the world. Traditional Japanese cooking emphasizes variety and balance. This is achieved using five colors, five cooking techniques, and five flavors. The traditional cuisine of Japan is based on rice. Side dishes often consist of fish, pickled vegetables, and vegetables cooked in broth. Like many other island nations, seafood is a common protein used in Japanese cuisine.
