Welcome to an Outdoor Adventure in Health, Nature and 4-H Fun!
Hey, Nature Navigator! We’re so excited to have you join us on a journey where adventure meets wellness! This program is your passport to explore the outdoors, move your body, calm your mind and learn more about the amazing world around you, all while having fun with 4-H!
As a 4-H member, you’ve pledged your head to clearer thinking, your health to better living for your club, community, country and world. That’s what Nature Navigators: Wellness in the Wild is all about, helping you live that pledge by getting outside, staying active and respecting the natural spaces around you.
Why Nature?
Spending time in nature is one of the best things you can do for your health!
Studies show that just 20 minutes outdoors can lower stress and help you feel happier. Being active in nature can make your heart stronger, your mind calmer and your body healthier. Nature time has even been linked to better focus, creativity and sleep.
What Will You Do?
Every season, you’ll complete a fun, themed lesson packed with activities like:
- Explore & Learn – Discover outdoor skills, science facts and cool creatures
- Healthy Recipe – Try a tasty snack or meal that fuels your outdoor adventures
- Physical Activity – An opportunity to move your body to improve your physical health
- Mindful Minute – A calm moment to breathe, reflect and feel connected to nature
- Nature Craft – Create something special using natural or recycled materials
- Reflection or Challenge – Journal your experience or try a bonus activity with your family or club
Stay Safe While You Explore
Before you head out on your next Nature Navigator adventure, make sure you’re staying safe! Whether you’re walking in your neighborhood, hiking with your 4-H club or visiting a park with your family, it’s important to be prepared and make smart choices. Safety comes first, so you can enjoy every outdoor moment!
Nature Navigators Safety Tips
- Always tell a trusted adult where you are going and when you’ll be back
- Participate with your family, club or a buddy, don’t explore alone
- Stay on marked trails to protect yourself and nature
- Respect nature, don’t disturb animals or pick plants
- Watch out for poison ivy, poison oak and thorny plants
- Be aware of snakes and insects, give them space and don’t poke or touch
- Bring water and stay hydrated
- Dress for the weather and wear appropriate shoes
- Use sunscreen and insect repellent when needed
- Leave No Trace™ and pack out everything you bring in
What Can You Learn Outside?
No matter where you live in the city, suburbs or country, there’s always something to explore! When you step outside, you might:
- Learn to identify birds, trees or animal tracks
- Practice using a compass or packing for a hike
- Observe the seasons changing around you
- Discover how to stay safe outdoors in all kinds of weather
- Explore pollinators like bees and butterflies in your garden or park
- Notice cloud shapes, stars or insects you’ve never paid attention to before
Every sidewalk, backyard, and trail holds the potential for adventure!
Where Can You Go?
We encourage you to explore Oklahoma’s amazing state and national parks, but you don’t need to travel far to connect with nature. You can:
- Walk around your neighborhood
- Explore a city park or local trail
- Visit a pond, creek or school garden
- Or simply sit in your backyard and listen to birdsong
Be a Nature Leader!
Invite a friend, sibling or your 4-H club to join the adventure. Share your discoveries, cook together or do a craft as a team!
As a Nature Navigator, remember to:
- Be respectful of plants, animals and people
- Be responsible – pack what you need and leave no trace
- Be curious – ask questions and explore with wonder!
